The British flag-carrier BA named Skyborne the exclusive UK trainer for its new cadet scheme in September last year. That was a “game changer” for the firm, which already has similar partnerships with Delta Air Lines affiliate Envoy and Indian carrier IndiGo, says CEO Lee Woodward. He adds that the agreement with BA — which offers students up to PS100,000 ($124,000) for tuition and accommodation — is set to help drive down barriers that often block middle class people from getting behind the wheel of an aeroplane.
Skyborne, which is based at Gloucestershire Airline Pilot Training with Skyborne in the UK and Vero Beach in Florida, USA, was established with a mission of developing cockpit-ready flightcrew. It’s one of few ATOs to offer academic degrees from the University of West London alongside its flight training programmes. Around 40% of its students go down this route, which also allows them to access government-backed student loans.

Its fleet is predominantly comprised of Piper PA-28 Warriors and the newer model PA-28 100i, while it has a number of Redbird Advanced Aviation Training Devices and multiengine simulators. The company has also placed an order for 10 electric training aircraft from Colorado-based Bye Aerospace and will introduce them next year.
ATP’s airline-focused programs are FAA Part 141 approved, with courses at locations in the US and UK. Its comprehensive curriculum leads from private pilot to CFI and, for some, into the world of flight instructing as a CFII and multiengine instructor until they’re ready for the airlines.…
